I. - OPENING COMMENTS

These customizations are not intended to remove credit from the
Sims game or in any way deface or blemish the great work of the
Maxis team. The game they have created is a customizer's dream.
They are simply an attempt to personalize the game to a greater
extent than just rudimentary skinning.

II. - GETTING STARTED

The ability to replace sounds is limited by two factors. First,
the sound has to be one that the game recognizes. Meaning, the
sound has to be similarly named to an event sound that aleady
exists. Secondly, The sound has to be formatted correctly and
properly placed in the Sims directory. While the files covered
in this document only cover a portion of the total list of all
of the Sims sounds, it does cover the most common. The majority
of sounds used by the Sims game are stored in CDROM/XA format
(CD-ROM/eXtended Architecture). The files types covered in this
document are stored in WAV format (Windows Waveform sound). The
format that most people can easily work with.

III. - THE SOUND FORMAT

The format of the sound files used by the game is as such:

22,050 Hz - 16-bit - Stereo - PCM format

While it may be possible to deviate from this format, it is not
recommended. Variances would result in sounds being played with
unfavorable results (files being played faster or slower, for
example).

The files I have created were saved using PCM format. I haven't
tested other formats (Microsoft ADPCM, IAC2, etc.). If it works
don't fix it.

IV. - MASTER SOUND LIST

This is a list of all of the WAVE sounds you can replace. You
will notice that a significant portion of the sounds listed in
this document have the word "Random" after them. These files
are similarly named and appear to be selected randomly when a
a particular event occurs in the game. I'm not certain that
the game uses these randomly. Until I learn otherwise, I will
treat them as such.

The master list is as follows:

sting_baby.wav - A baby arrives.
sting_danger1.wav - A burglar arrives (Random #1).
sting_danger2.wav - A burglar arrives (Random #2).

V. ADDING AND REMOVING SOUNDS

As mentioned earlier, the sound files need to be properly placed
in the Sims game directory if they are going to be recognized by
the game. To accomplish this, create a folder (if it doesn't
already exist) in your Sims SoundData folder named "Stings". The
location will be dependant on where you installed the game. If
you used the default, the SoundData folder is located as such:

C:\Program Files\Maxis\The Sims\SoundData\

Regardless of where you installed The Sims, you need to ensure
that the "Stings" is placed properly. The default location will
appear as follows:

C:\Program Files\Maxis\The Sims\SoundData\Stings\

To add sounds, place the new files into the Stings folder. The
game should recognize them during game play.

To remove sounds, move them out of the Stings folder. The game
should return to using the original sound files.

It's that simple!
